Posts and burdens

Greetings, friends, members and supporters of our church at Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Orere Point, Conifer Grove, Takanini, and in the southern part of Auckland – and beyond.

The Peace of Christ be with you!

Let us Pray

Jesus, we give thanks for those who have helped us when we have been weighed down.
- when worry, grief or fear has pressed too heavily upon us.
We thank you for the help of friends, family and counsellors,
and for the blessings we receive from the beauty around us.
In Christ’s name.
AMEN

Burdens

I have been enjoying walking through Cornwell Park and up to the top of One Tree Hill/Maungakeikei, each Saturday. It is a popular walk, and I am always noticing new things: the large pockets of kauri trees, and the number of pheasants that populate the area.

Last weekend, just as I reached the top, I saw this group of young Niueans carrying these very heavy posts. They said they were “in training” but I didn’t manage to find out what they were in training for. One or two seemed to be carrying the post alone, but most shared the burden.

Heavy loads.

Our Scriptures make numerous mentions of the loads and burdens that we carry.

Jesus was especially critical of the hypocrisy of those who place burdens on the shoulders of others:

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practise what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. (Matthew 23)

He offers the promise of release from the burdens that become too heavy to bear.

28 ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’  (Matthew 11)

Paul, in Galatians 6, encourages us with these words:

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ.

Let us pray

Dear God,
we are mindful today of those who carry the burdens created by war, by natural disaster and the impacts of hunger and illness.
We pray for those whose worlds have been darkened by grief or worry.
Please help us to know your freedom and peace.
And to be your gentle workers in bringing restoration to those who are weighed down.
In Christ’s name.
AMEN
