Ducks, wings and God's safety.

Greetings, friends, members, and supporters of our church in Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Orere Point, Conifer Grove, Takanini, and the southern part of Auckland—and beyond.

The Peace of Christ be with you!

Let us Pray

God of love,
we give thanks today for the people and things that provide us a sense of safety and security.
For the homes that we live in,
for the friends and family who are mindful of us,
for police, emergency services and first responders,
and all who we rely on in times of dangeror emergency.
We give thank to you, our Rock and Redeemer.
AMEN

Paradise Shelducks

I did not realise that these ducks are only found in New Zealand.  After a little research I learn that when he first saw them, Captain Cook called them ‘Painted Ducks.’ The early European settlers gave them the name ‘paradise’ and in te reo Māori they are named pūtangitangi  - tangi in the sense of lament for the dead – because of their unusual cry.

Sandy took this photo yesterday of a female with her young, happily wandering around in Cornwall Park.

Ducks, wings and feathers

As we watched the ducks, the male moved towards us, warning us to keep our distance, then moved with his mate and ducklings a little further away to safety.

I was interested to see that the protection and care provided by birds to their young is an image repeated in our scriptures to describe the safety we find in God:

In Psalm 91 for example we read:

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

And we find this ancient blessing in Ruth 2:

The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!”

Let us Pray

Dear God, you are our refuge and strength.
We pray today for all who long for refuge:
for those in unsafe places,
and for all who fear for the well-being of their friends and families.
Strengthen the work of peacemakers we ask,
and uphold all those working to bring safety and security to troubled places.
In the name of Jesus, we pray.
AMEN
